What Is the New Capability Framework in the Public Sector?
January 24, 2025Mastering the Higher Specialist Training (HST) Interview
The Higher Specialist Training (and indeed Basic Specialist Training) interviews are uniquely challenging. With a brief window of just 15 to 20 minutes, you must demonstrate to the interview board why you deserve a place in this highly competitive training program. To help you stand out, here are some key strategies to make a lasting impression.
Share the “Why” Behind Your Career Choice
The most compelling answers are personal and authentic. The board wants to understand your motivation and what drives you. One example that stands out is a client of mine from the Middle East who pursued medical studies in Ireland on a scholarship. He was applying for a HST in Radiology and shared how a close family member faced a prolonged illness, during which accurate diagnosis was delayed due to limited imaging resources. This experience fuelled his passion for radiology and his dedication to improving diagnostic precision. Stories like this resonate because they reveal the human connection behind your professional aspirations.
Prepare for Behavioural / Competency Questions
Your ability to communicate well with colleagues and families is a critical factor for success in HST interview. Expect questions about teamwork, conflict resolution, handling failure, and making tough decisions. The STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is invaluable here. Focus your answer on the action you took, dedicating about 75% of your response to this part. Strong, real-world examples can highlight your ability to navigate complex situations effectively. Highlight What Makes You Unique
While you won’t know who else is competing, it’s essential to identify what sets you apart. Lean into your strengths and showcase how they make you the ideal candidate. For example, if you have significant research experience, emphasize its relevance and the value it adds to the field. Mention specific areas of research you’re passionate about and your vision for contributing further.
Body Language
How you show up matters. The decision-makers will assess both your warmth and your competence. Be fully present, confident, and authentic during the interview. Prepare examples that demonstrate your suitability and weave them naturally into your answers. Let your personality shine while maintaining professionalism.
Conclusion
By following these tips and going into the interview with a clear game plan, you’ll greatly increase your chances of success. The HST interview is your opportunity to show the board not only what you’ve achieved but also who you are—and why you’re the perfect fit for this prestigious program.
